Gonzo: Revolucionarios is a cautionary tale about the consequences of ambition without ethics. It updates the foreign correspondent, Latin American political, and drug kingpin dramas, weaving them into a hyper-real gonzo-correspondent, Venezuelan historical crime and buddy dramedy told in 60-minute serial episodes with an ongoing plot. The story is driven by flawed, complex characters who defy stereotyping. To start, we ditch the well-connected, know-it-all action-hero for a broadcast rookie and political naïf, a heroine who often finds herself in laughable predicaments. Rather than in a rural mansion with a helipad, our Scarface lives in an urban middle-class home where he plays whiffle ball with his kids – no Uzis in sight. And instead of a fictional, macho-man dictator, ours is the actual acapella-singing, joke-telling, tear-shedding Chavez as he appears in archival footage. To meet the growing desire for believable, visually-gritty, Latin American dramas, we base our world events and characters on the reality we witnessed living and reporting in Caracas. Our antagonist and story are also directly inspired by the real life gangster, and once prominent Chavista, Alberto “Chino” Carías, who is the subject of our award-winning hour-long documentary, Tupamaro: Urban Guerrillas, directed by Martín Andrés Markovits. The film was released worldwide on Arte, Nat Geo Mundo, and Amazon Prime, and was favorably covered by NPR, The Daily Beast and major newspapers around Latin America. Spain’s El Pais called our subject, “the Tony Soprano of Western Caracas,” and multiple reviews spotlighted the doc for its remarkably objective exploration of evil. Like the reporters in our show, shooting and releasing the documentary was dangerous. It forced us to make the same choice that confronts our protagonists: play it safe and glorify the subject – or tell the truth, and risk everything.
